Triethanolamine can corrode aluminum, why can it be used in antifreeze

The thermal expansion of all kinds of antifreeze is large, and can only be added to 95% of the total capacity of the cooling system when filling. When deploying antifreeze, its freezing point should be 5℃ lower than the lowest temperature in the area where it is used.

Corrosion inhibitors can be divided into two categories: one is inorganic compound corrosion inhibitors, which include metasilicates, phosphates, tungstate, borate, nitrite and molybdate, benzoate and so on.

As an inorganic compound Corrosion Inhibitor, it can form a dense passivation film on the metal surface, which can block or prevent the hydrogen and acid infiltration of metal.

The other is an organic compound corrosion inhibitor, which is often used as an anti-rust additive in antifreeze. Commonly used are triethanolamine, benzotriazole, mercaptobenzothiazole, organophosphate, etc., the corrosion inhibition performance is better, triethanolamine, phosphate, organophosphate, although the corrosion of black metal is good, but the corrosion of brass, copper;

Silicate is an excellent corrosion inhibitor for aluminum, but it is extremely easy to hydrolyze and form a large amount of flocculent precipitation. Although the cost of these single varieties of corrosion inhibitors is low, it is difficult to meet the performance requirements of many aspects of antifreeze.

Since triethanolamine can corroded aluminum, why is it also used in car antifreeze, it is because although it is corrosive, but its freezing point is very low, can reach negative 50 degrees, everything has two sides, use it to make car antifreeze, winter is not easy to freeze, antifreeze can prevent scale.

The biggest headache for drivers is the problem of scale, scale attached to the metal surface of the water tank and water jacket, so that the heat dissipation effect is getting worse and worse, and it is difficult to remove. The high-quality antifreeze is made of distilled water and added with anti-scale additives, which not only does not produce scale but also has the function of scaling.
