Selection method of steel cold rolling and rolling oil

Cold rolling is the process of plastic deformation of metal materials by rolling under the recrystallization temperature. In the rolling process, the plastic deformation of the metal will produce deformation heat, and the friction between the strip and the roll surface will produce friction heat. Therefore, in cold rolling, rolling oil or rolling fluid is usually used to lubricate and cool the deformation area.

Rolling fluid is a kind of emulsion which is made by mixing rolling oil and water which can be emulsified. The usual concentration is 0.5% ~ 5.0%. The following is a simple introduction of how to select rolling oil for general carbon steel strip cold rolling mill from the perspective of rolling oil performance indicators:

Saponification number

When rolling strips of different specifications, the mill has different requirements for the lubrication degree of rolling fluid, and we will initially use the saponification value of pure oil to classify the lubrication quality of rolling fluid. Generally, the higher the saponification value, the better the lubrication. The rolling force decreases with the increase of saponification value for the rolling mill with the work roll surface width less than 800mm.

When rolling thicker and thinner plates above 0.5mm, it is recommended to use mineral oil series rolling oil with saponification value of about 30 ~ 50mgKOHg with low lubrication property, and its emulsion is stable. When rolling 0.3 ~ 0.5mm thin plate, it is recommended to use the mixture of ester and natural fat with a medium lubricity of 50 ~ 130mgKOHg, and the state of the emulsion is unstable. When rolling extremely thin sheets below 0.3mm, it is recommended to use a grease rolling lubricant with excellent lubrication and a saponification value of 160 ~ 200mgKOHg, and the state of its emulsion is extremely unstable.

With the development of rolling oil lubricant technology and the continuous development of new materials, some lubrication materials with low saponification value or no saponification value have excellent lubrication properties, so it is not possible to judge the lubrication properties of rolling oil simply by saponification value.

Emulsion particle size

The lubricity of the emulsion is also directly related to its particle size and water dispersion. Water dispersion is the ability of the emulsion to free oil, which is a macroscopic manifestation of the emulsion particle size distribution in the emulsion. When the emulsion system is the same, the water separation ductility of the more stable emulsion is usually lower than that of the unstable lubricant. The smaller the particle size of the emulsion, the more stable the emulsion is. However, the smaller the particle size, the better the cooling property. On the contrary, the larger the particle size of the emulsion, the better the spreadability and lubrication, but the worse the cooling property.

In addition to the above factors, factors such as mill speed, post-rolling process arrangement, plate surface cleanliness requirements, mill emulsion injection pressure and flow rate should also be considered.
