Can antifreeze prevent rust? What happens when antifreeze enters the engine oil?

December 13, 2022
1. Can antifreeze prevent rust?
Antifreeze can prevent rust and will not corrode the water channel of the engine. Therefore, the automobile engine must use special antifreeze. The Owner shall not use tap water instead of antifreeze. If tap water is used instead of antifreeze, the waterways will be corroded.

The full name of antifreeze is antifreeze coolant. The function of antifreeze is not to prevent freezing but to cool down. The water-cooled engine needs to rely on antifreeze to continuously circulate in the engine to take away excess heat. There are two circulation paths for antifreeze in the engine, one is large circulation and the other is small circulation. When the engine is just started, the engine temperature is relatively low, and the antifreeze will circulate in a small range.

The antifreeze will not dissipate heat through the radiator tank during small circulation, which helps the engine to heat up quickly. When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, the antifreeze will circulate widely. During large circulation, antifreeze will dissipate heat through radiator tank. This keeps the engine within the normal operating temperature range.

The antifreeze needs to be replaced regularly. If it is not replaced for a long time, the boiling point of antifreeze will drop and the freezing point will rise. When replacing antifreeze, be sure to clean the old antifreeze, and then add new antifreeze. When replacing the antifreeze, be sure to choose a big brand product.

2. What happens when antifreeze enters engine oil?
When antifreeze enters the engine oil, it will affect the cooling of the engine, reduce the cleaning effect of impurities such as engine oil, and lose the lubrication of parts. In serious cases, the engine will be scrapped directly, as detailed below.

1) Affect engine cooling:
We know that antifreeze and engine oil can cool the automobile engine, but if they are mixed together, they will react and reduce their working capacity. If the engine does not cool down, it will explode and boil, affecting the power of the automobile, or even making the engine scrapped directly.

2) Loss of cleaning function:
Oil can remove sludge and other impurities from the engine. If antifreeze enters the engine oil, it will be diluted, thus reducing the cleaning ability of the engine oil. Over a long period of time, it is easy to cause carbon deposition in the engine, which causes the car engine to shake, make abnormal noises and other symptoms.

3) Lubrication loss:

The most important function of oil is lubrication. The antifreeze entering the engine oil will reduce its lubrication effect, increase the wear of internal parts of the engine to a certain extent, reduce the service life of the engine, and may directly scrap the engine in serious cases.

Precautions for antifreeze and oil:
1) Check and replace antifreeze and engine oil on time.

2) Different types and brands of antifreeze and engine oil cannot be mixed.
