Microorganism in water-based cutting fluids mainly include bacteria and fungi, which are the main causes of product odor. The cutting fluid formula contains a large number of microbial nutrient sources, and open operation during use, objectively unavoidable microbial reproduction.

How to avoid smelly from the perspective of use management
The main reason for the corruption of water-based cutting fluid is the excessive reproduction of microorganisms. Anticorrosion management must start with inhibiting the reproduction of microorganisms. The measures that can be taken are:
(1) Use cutting fluids that contain less microbial nutrient components, and use an appropriate amount of antiseptic and fungicides to prevent the reproduction of microorganisms.
(2) When injecting new liquid, first completely remove the cutting chips and foreign matter around the machine tool and in the liquid supply system, and thoroughly clean it with a fungicide. Failure to clean it is equivalent to putting spoilage bacteria in the new liquid.
(3) Use tap water or demineralized water that meets drinking standards for dilution water, and avoid using water with too high hardness.
(4) Regularly check the pH value of the liquid used. When it is found that the pH value has a tendency to decrease, new liquid should be added or a pH improver should be added to keep it in the range where microorganisms are difficult to grow and multiply.
(5) Regularly check the concentration of the used solution, and replenish the new solution or original solution in time when it is found to be insufficient; the high-temperature season water evaporation is large, and the salt ion concentration should be checked. If it is too high, it will easily cause the emulsion to decompose, and the soft water must be added in time; keep it in use The liquid works at the specified normal concentration.
(6) Regularly check the reproduction of microorganisms. If signs of corruption have been detected, anti-corrosion and sterilization measures must be taken. It is generally believed that when the number of viable bacteria exceeds 10^6/mL, an antiseptic fungicide should be added immediately to control its reproduction.
(7) Pay attention to prevent the leakage of oil from mixing, and install a device that can quickly remove the oil.
(8) Adopt an effective chip removal method to avoid long-term deposition of chips, especially fine chips, in the liquid tank.

(9) When the machine is shut down for a long time on holidays, etc., in the past, it was advocated to adopt aeration method, even if the cutting fluid is circulated and stirred, or air is blown into the liquid tank to prevent the reproduction of anaerobic bacteria, and at the same time, remove the odor in time.

However, recent data believe that microorganisms can also produce low-grade acids under aerobic conditions, which can cause offensive odors. The dissolution of carbon dioxide in the air into the cutting fluid will lower the pH value and promote the reproduction of microorganisms. Therefore, the correct approach is to appropriately increase the concentration and pH value of the used liquid (maintain above 9) before stopping the machine, and add an appropriate amount of antiseptic and fungicide.
