Molding oil products develop without foaming!

It is often seen that metal forming oils generate large amounts of foam during metalworking. The metal forming oil of mechanical equipment has a huge harm of bubbles. At present, the fast defoaming speed has become an important factor for metal manufacturing enterprises to choose metalworking fluids. "Know it, know why", so we first need to understand the cause of metal forming oil foaming.

1. Reasons for foaming of metal forming oil

(1) The anti-foaming performance of the molding oil is unqualified. The molding oil is generally added with some surfactant additives. When no Anti-foaming Agent is added, it is very easy to cause foaming of the lubricating oil when it is subjected to vibration and stirring.


(2) The viscosity of the oil is not suitable. Too large or too small viscosity will also cause the forming oil to foam. Different types and viscosity grades of metal forming oil should be selected according to different applications and loads.


(3) The oil suction pipe is leaking. The air leakage of the oil suction pipe joint in the front section of the oil pump is not tightly sealed or the air leakage of the oil accumulator valve will directly lead to the generation of air bubbles.


(4) The installation position of the oil return pipe is unreasonable. Due to the improper installation position of the oil return pipe, the metal forming oil in the oil return pipe impacts the oil surface, causing great shock and fluctuation and causing the oil to foam.


(5) The new oil is polluted during use. Oil emulsification due to the entry of water into the tank, mechanical impurities and other substances such as solid lubricants. And the quality deteriorates and foams, so the sludge in the fuel tank should be cleaned regularly.


(6) Mixed oil. The mixed use of metal forming oils of different brands or different manufacturers will also be one of the reasons for the foaming of metal forming oils, so mixing oils should be avoided. Before changing to other grades of metal forming oil, the old oil in the oil tank and oil pipeline should be cleaned.


(7) The oil filter is not smooth. If some of the oil suction holes of the coarse filter at the inlet of the oil mill are blocked by impurities, air bubbles will be generated due to partial vacuum.


(8) Inactivation of antifoaming agents. As the antifoaming agent is gradually solubilized or consumed, the antifoaming and defoaming ability is weakened.

Second, the hazards of metal forming oil foaming:
(1) The heat dissipation performance of the lubricating oil deteriorates

When a large amount of foam is concentrated on the surface of the fuel tank, the foam film forms a compartment thermal layer, which deteriorates the heat dissipation performance of the metal forming oil in the fuel tank, reduces the cooling capacity, and eventually leads to an increase in the oil temperature.


(2) Oxidative deterioration of metal forming oil intensifies

After bubbles are generated on the surface of the fuel tank or in the fuel tank, the contact area between the oil and the air increases, and the increase in the oil temperature will aggravate the oxidative deterioration of the Base Oil additives, resulting in a large amount of sludge at the bottom of the fuel tank.


(3) The lubricating performance of the lubricating oil decreases

Oil foaming will reduce the lubricating performance of metal forming oil, aggravate the wear and sintering of parts, and reduce the service life of the machine.


(4) The wear of the parts increases and the noise increases

Due to the compressibility of foam, when the metal forming oil containing bubbles is transported into the hydraulic cylinder through the oil pump, the piston will vibrate and increase the noise; in addition, the mechanical friction will increase due to the reduced lubricity, which will also lead to increased noise.


(5) Affect the hydraulic transmission system

A large amount of foam will affect the transmission of pressure and power, and will cause hydraulic transmission for hydraulic transmission locomotives.


(6) Metal forming oil overflows in the fuel tank

If a large number of air bubbles are generated in the fuel tank, they cannot be eliminated in time. It will increase the volume of oil, or even overflow the fuel tank, or make the liquid level indicator indicate the false oil level, so that the lack of oil cannot be found in time.


(7) Shorten the oil change cycle, resulting in energy waste. Oil foaming will aggravate the decline of oil quality, worsen the slippery performance, and cause the noise of the equipment to increase.

To sum up, molding oil bubbles have many effects on processing. How can we effectively suppress the formation of foam?

The metal forming oil of the mechanical equipment is very harmful to air bubbles. To solve these unfavorable factors, it is necessary to add new oil or replace the high-performance metal forming oil in time.
