Different grinding processes have different requirements for cutting fluids?

April 03, 2022

From a cutting oil standpoint, grinding is like a series of small high-speed cuts, so it is sometimes called multipoint cutting. Its temperature is quite high, and most of the heat at high temperature is absorbed by the workpiece. Cooling is very important for grinding. High temperatures, if not properly controlled, can change the shape of the workpiece. In addition, the cutting oil must have a cleaning agent and a good wetting effect, can penetrate the grinding area to remove the grinding debris on the grinding wheel, and can prevent the grinding wheel from becoming smooth and losing its grinding effect. At the same time, it enables those small chips and impurities to be easily separated from the cutting oil.

cutting fluids

Some easy-to-machine metals, such as cast iron and free-cutting steel, are easy to grind. We generally use some transparent water-soluble cutting fluids or synthetic cutting fluids. The main purpose of these cutting fluids is to reduce the temperature of the workpiece, keep the grinding wheel clean, and remove the grinding and metal chips during machining; at the same time, prevent the workpiece from rusting and corroding before and after grinding.

Grind some of the more difficult metals such as stainless steel and high-nickel alloys, which are known to be sticky. Because at very high temperatures, these metals will corrode and adhere to the friction particles of the grinding wheel, thus causing the grinding wheel to become smooth and lose friction.

In order to avoid this situation, the cutting fluid should not only have the functions of cooling and cleaning, but also have the function of lubricating. Therefore, in the grinding cutting fluid, chlorine and sulfur extreme pressure additives should be added. Sulfur is particularly important here, since the temperature is quite high when the grinding wheel and the workpiece rub.

For these more difficult metals, water-soluble or oil-based cutting oils containing the above-mentioned additives are often used. Oily cutting oils should have a very low Base Oil viscosity to ensure that they penetrate, cool, and carry additives to the grinding area.

In grinding, the quality of the finished product is greatly affected by the cutting oil. In generally rougher grinding operations, the main purpose of machining is to remove a large amount of metal. In this case, the cutting oil requires less lubricating properties and greater cleaning power to ensure the cleanliness of the grinding wheel. The suitable products are transparent water-soluble cutting fluids or synthetic cutting fluids.

For grinding operations requiring fairly good quality of the finished product, the cutting oil should have more lubricating effects. You can choose to use water-soluble cutting fluids with more additives and higher concentrations or low-viscosity oil-based cutting oils.
