Is the cutting fluid for aluminum fully synthetic or semi-synthetic?

July 06, 2022

Whether the cutting fluid for aluminum is fully synthetic or semi-synthetic depends mainly on what effect you want to achieve. Fully synthetic water has good heat transfer performance and cooling effect, and semi-synthetic water has good cooling, lubricating and anti-rust properties. Compared with semi-synthetic cutting fluid and Fully Synthetic Cutting Fluid, they have the following differences:

semi synthetic fluid for aluminium

The semi-synthetic cutting fluid has relatively poor lubricating performance and poor processing results. Fully synthetic cutting fluid does not contain mineral oil substances, and has many advantages such as long service life, cooling, cleaning, stability, etc. Semi-synthetic cutting fluid, due to the difficulty of adding oil-soluble lubricant additives, leads to weak lubricity, which is practical in production and processing. not effectively.

Semi-synthetic cutting fluid should be better than fully synthetic cutting fluid in terms of dimensional accuracy and product finish. It is not as good as fully synthetic cutting fluid in terms of anti-rust treatment, chip removal and chip sinking ability. The performance is relatively good, and they can be done without pollution to the environment.

Semi-synthetic cutting fluid is not prone to foaming, but it is more difficult to solve once foaming, while fully synthetic cutting fluid is more likely to foam, and foaming is easier to deal with. In the event of leakage of lubricating oil, the fully synthetic cutting fluid is relatively easy to clean, while the semi-synthetic cutting fluid will reduce the efficiency and emulsification performance.

The lubricity of semi-synthetic is better than that of fully synthetic, and the adaptability of fully synthetic cutting fluid to water quality is stronger than that of semi-synthetic cutting fluid. In fact, if it is a good semi-synthetic or a good fully synthetic cutting fluid, the gap between these is not big.

Selection of cutting fluid

During rough machining, the machining allowance is large, the cutting amount used is large, and a large amount of cutting heat is generated. When high-speed steel milling cutters are used for cutting, the main purpose of using cutting fluid is to reduce cutting temperature and reduce milling cutter wear. Use low-concentration emulsion or semi-synthetic.

When finishing, the surface roughness value is required to be small. Generally, a cutting fluid with better lubricating performance, such as a high-concentration emulsion, is selected. When machining hard-to-machine materials such as high-strength steel and high-temperature alloys, since the cutting process is in a state of extreme pressure lubrication and friction, cutting fluids containing extreme pressure additives should be selected.

When cutting non-ferrous metals, copper and aluminum alloys, in order to obtain higher surface quality and accuracy, 10% to 20% of the emulsion can be used, but sulfur-containing cutting fluids cannot be used, because sulfur has a corrosive effect on non-ferrous metals. When cutting magnesium alloys, aqueous solutions cannot be used to avoid burning.
