What are the differences in tapping torque testing for water-based metal cutting fluid products?

How to evaluate the lubricating performance of different water-based cutting fluids in the laboratory? It can be compared by tapping torque test, and the instrument used is tapping torque machine. This instrument is a laboratory instrument commonly used by major cutting fluid companies at present. It uses pre processed metal plates with a certain aperture, including aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, stainless steel, carbon steel, etc., to compare and analyze the lubrication of cutting fluid according to the measured tapping torque value. The four ball machine is not suitable for evaluating the lubricity of metalworking fluid, especially the water-based cutting fluid, which has very poor correlation, while the tapping torque machine has very good correlation. Tapping torque machine is suitable for both water-based cutting fluid and pure oil products.

The tapping torque values of existing fully synthetic, semi synthetic and microemulsion cutting fluid products were tested by tapping torque meter, and the lubricating properties of each product were compared. The metal plate used for tapping is made of aluminum alloy 6082. The measured tapping torque data are shown in the following figure and table.

The results show that:
The lubricating properties of water-based cutting fluid products vary greatly according to their types.

Lubricity: fully synthetic

Among them, the lubricity of fully synthetic 500 and semi synthetic 200B is similar, and they are suitable for processing with low lubrication requirements such as grinding. The difference between the two is that 500 system contains no oil, while 200B system contains a small amount of oil;

Semi synthetic 210 and 200TM have similar lubricity, which are suitable for machining with moderate lubrication requirements such as cutting aluminum alloy materials, and are also suitable for grinding. The difference between the two is that 210 working fluid is translucent liquid with excellent antibacterial property, and 200TM working fluid is transparent liquid with excellent aluminum corrosion inhibition property;

Microemulsion 300B and 306 have similar lubricity and are suitable for machining with high lubrication requirements such as cutting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The difference between the two is that 300B is more suitable for machining steel and aluminum alloy materials, and 306 is more suitable for machining copper alloy materials.
